John Pope is a bass player and composer based in the North East of England. His main focus as a creative musician explores the boundaries and combinations of jazz, free improvisation, rock and experimental music.

In Partnership with Jazz NorthHis primary projects include a chord-less quintet of Northern musicians, an ongoing composition project blending structured pieces and free improvisation with a flexible ‘chamber group’ ensemble. This event is brought to you in partnership with Jazz North.

Looking forward to this. If you listen to the track on the website below, someone has written. "Loving the energy, vibes and sense of fun on this - as well as the superb musicianship. The perfect antidote for bleak grey days in Winter lock-down."  And it certainly is. Most lively engaging music to enjoy. The Jazz Mann blog says this about the band -  "Given its chordless line up it should perhaps come as no surprise to learn that Pope’s quintet was first assembled to perform a tribute concert to Ornette Coleman commissioned by Jazz North East in 2016. The group quickly developed to become Pope’s main creative outlet as a composer and bandleader and the bassist also cites the influence of Charles Mingus, Misha Mengelberg and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Pope also cites the inspiration of a “DIY alternative rock attitude” and describes his group’s music as “dynamic, off-kilter and celebratory”  and as “a joyous racket”.

John Pope - Double Bass and Compositions; Jamie Stockbridge - Alto Saxophone; Faye Maccalman - Tenor Saxophone and Clarinet; Graham Hardy - Trumpet; Johnny Hunter - Drums.

"Pope and his colleagues strike an almost perfect balance between composition and improvisation and between form and freedom. There’s also an essential energy and joyousness about the performances that evades the solemnity and seriousness of much free jazz."  The Jazz Mann

"The John Pope Quintet draws on the history of 60s avant jazz and hard bop, but with a modern sensibility grounded in the sounds of today’s European jazz scene. Open- hearted, quirky compositions and dynamic anything-goes improvisation, played with a hard- swinging groove and referencing everybody from Ornette Coleman to Tom Waits and Mingus to the Pixies. The John Pope Quintet kicks up a joyful racket full of rewards for the adventurous listener."  Jazz North
