Issie Barratt, artistic Director of the National Youth Jazz Collective (NYJC) will be joined by NYJC alumni and BBC Young Jazz Musicians finalists 2020 Alex Clarke (saxophones) and Ralph Porrett (guitars) in a masterclass of musical tips and techniques that deliver the wow factor to any budding musician.
The session will take the format of a #NationalYouthJazzCollective Wednesdays, online discussion with the advice and musical banter that has inspired and motivated isolated young musicians across the UK throughout the pandemic crisis. Chaired by Issie, Alex and Ralph will be sharing hot tips on constructive practice and rehearsal time, finding your musical voice and communicating to an audience, interspersed with live musical demonstrations.
There will be time to answer some questions during the session.
Issie Barratt, is a multi-award winning internationally active jazz composer, arranger, conductor, baritone player, record producer and educator. Founder of the National Youth Jazz Collective in 2007, Fuzzy Moon Records in 2008 & first Jazz Director of Ivor Academy’s Board of Directors (2013) Issie took the Parliamentary Jazz Award for Education in 2014 and Music Teachers Best Musical Initiative Award for Excellence in 2017.
Alex Clarke. As a finalist in the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2020, and the winner of the "Rising Star" category in the 2019 British Jazz Awards, Alex is one of the most exciting young jazz musicians emerging on the UK jazz scene. Known for her versatility and open-minded attitude towards jazz, Alex enjoys performing a range of genres from New Orleans to bebop. Praised for her extensive repertoire list and intelligent ear for harmony, she brings a youthful, intuitive approach that always sounds authentic in a variety of musical settings.
Ralph Porrett was the first ever guitarist to perform in the BBC Young Jazz Musician Final. Currently in his 3rd year at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Ralph draws inspiration from Wes Montgomery, Bill Frisell and Mike Walker. Regular performances with his trio consolidate these influences and catalyse the development of his voice as an improviser. Memorable moments include performing at the Music for Youth Proms, playing with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and hearing the orchestral arrangements CBSO commissioned him to write, performed at Symphony Hall in 2019 by ‘Project Remix’.
