Alina Bzhezhinska (Hip Harp)
Ukrainian-born harpist Alina Bzhezhinska was born in the Ukraine and studied art and classical music in Poland and the USA before settling in London. She has performed internationally with many leading orchestras and she will be appearing at the Festival with her quartet, performing a set heavily influenced by the music of Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, 90s Trip hop and Kuti-esque Afrobeat.
Alina Bzhezhinska is an internationally renowned harpist/composer with dynamic stage presence and soulful technique.
The harp is an unusual, but wonderful, jazz instrument and Alina pays homage to some of jazz and funk’s greatest innovators, including the two other legendary female harpists, Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane. In 2018 she won a PRS Women Make Jazz Grant and was nominated for Jazz FM’s Best Live Experience Award. She has collaborated with Shabaka Hutchings, Kamaal Williams, Ursula Rucher and Tony Kofi. Her latest band, using electronics and loop pedals, consists of Mikele Montolli (Bass), Adam Teixeira (Drums) and Joel Prime (Percussion). This will be both an inspiring and spiritual experience that will live long in the memory.
“Inspiration goes far beyond the bounds of the usual jazz “tribute” album. Bzhezhinska’s own compositions more than hold their own alongside the classics from Alice and John Coltrane.”
