Claire Martin and Liane Carroll
The 2019 Ribble Valley Jazz Festival celebrates its 10th annual event with a Friday evening headline concert witnessing the return of two wonderful jazz singers, Claire Martin & Liane Carroll. Both return to The Grand following previously successful jazz festival performances but this time performing as a duo.
Both performers are numerous award winners. Claire Martin OBE gained the 2018 British Jazz Award for the best vocalist, an award she has won on seven previous occasions.
The British Jazz Awards continue to provide a valuable form of recognition for the best in the UK’s Jazz scene. The amazing Claire Martin, described by The Times as ‘Our finest Singer’ is especially honoured to make the 2018 top spot in the company of the wonderful Clare Teal, Tina May, Georgia Mancio and Sarah Dowling. Claire has since released 20 albums with the Linns Records label, collaborating on many of these recordings with musical luminaries including Martin Taylor, John Martyn, Stephane Grappelli, Kenny Barron, Richard Rodney Bennett and Jim Mullen.
Liane Carroll, another amazing jazz vocalist, who doubles on piano, has numerous awards to her credit including achievement of the British Jazz Award for the best vocalist in 2016. As a recording artist Liane has gained much critical acclaim. Her four most recentalbums (Slow Down, Up and Down, Ballads, Seaside) earned four star reviews in The Guardian newspaper. Her latest release ‘Seaside’ (Linn Records) pays homage to her life by the coast. She holds a coveted British Jazz Award for Best New CD (2015). As well as Liane’s solo performances, current projects include her Trio with husband bassist Roger Carey and drummer Russell Field.
Friends since their late teens, these two multi-award winning jazz vocalists celebrate their love of the Great American Songbook with their highly acclaimed show ‘Double Standards’. From Claire, singing solo and together with Liane on piano, expect songs from Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and George Gershwin alongside more contemporary songs by Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell and Donald Fagan.

"Claire Martin ranks among the four or five finest female jazz vocalists on the planet" Jazz Times USA
Claire and Liane will also be hosting a vocal masterclass for a limited number of singers on the Saturday of the Festival in which you can participate or observe.
